How we count carbs
Every carb number on this site is worked out the same way, and every recipe shows its working.
- The UK wayWe use the UK "Carbohydrate" figure, which already has fibre taken out. We never subtract fibre again, so our numbers aren't flattered.
- Official figures firstIngredients come from the UK government's official food tables (McCance and Widdowson's)[1]. Where they don't have a figure, or the product we use is different (like 90% meat sausages), we use a typical UK supermarket label.
- Weighed, added up, then rounded upWe weigh out each ingredient, add up the carbs, divide by the servings and always round up. Where a recipe gives a choice, we count the higher one.
- We say what's includedEach recipe says whether the figure includes the sides and toppings, and what suggested sides would add.
- Sweeteners count as zeroUK labels list erythritol under carbohydrate (as a "polyol"), but your body doesn't use it for energy, so we count it as 0g.
- They're estimatesBrands and sizes vary. If you need to be exact, for example for diabetes medication, check your own labels.
